Kupe had a desire to explore our natural world and his pursuit of knowledge led him here.
He is acknowledged as a great explorer and navigator and named the harbour, Te Puna i te Ao Mārama, (The Spring of the World of Light) on his arrival.
Kowhaiwhai and tukutuku/taniko patterns have been used in this design.
Puhoro is representive of warriors, waka, and the moana, swiftness and speed. Aronui is a tukutuku and tāniko design which refers to the pursuit of knowledge about the natural world.
Niho taniwha for our Rangatira and kaitiaki, their strength and leadership.
